Palestinian Authority Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh said on 24 October that Israel's policy of collective punishment "warrants clear international condemnation" and urged action to stop the violations, in a post on X reported by WAFA, a day after the Hebron closure began.
He said those responsible must be held to account under international law and that a whole people should not be held hostage to such policies. Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa contacted Hebron's governor and mayor about the closure the same day, and the government issued a statement on the escalation, WAFA reported.
On 23 October National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir had called for the Palestinian Authority to be dismantled and demilitarised. On 26 October the Hebron governor briefed foreign diplomats on the impact of the operation, according to WAFA. Ben-Gvir made the call hours after the shooting.
