South African jurist Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay was awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on 9 October for her work on peace and international law. The 85-year-old is a former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and judge at the Rwanda tribunal, and the fifth South African to win the prize.

Until November 2025 she chaired the UN commission of inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which concluded in September 2025 that Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. She also serves as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice.

Israel rejects the commission's findings and has called for it to be dissolved. Later in October, the commission, now chaired by Srinivasan Muralidhar, told the UN General Assembly that genocidal acts in Gaza are continuing despite the ceasefire. Israel has long disputed its work.
