Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas cancelled legislative elections due in November and set 11 September 2027 for both presidential and legislative votes, blaming Israeli measures and conditions in Gaza.

The decree cited Israeli military operations, settlement expansion, settler violence, movement restrictions and Israel's withholding of Palestinian tax revenues, The Times of Israel and Reuters reported.

It also pointed to conditions in Gaza, the incomplete Israeli withdrawal, slow reconstruction and the absence of international stabilisation forces.

Hamas and Islamic Jihad backed the delay. Israel's foreign minister accused Abbas of deceiving the international community.

Palestinian activist Samer Sinijlawi told France 24 on 15 October the delay was a terrible disappointment.
