Such visits have grown in size and openness, with Jewish prayer now tolerated on the eastern side of the site. Palestinians and Jordan regard it as a breach of the status quo.

Dozens of Israeli settlers entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound through the Moroccan Gate on Sunday under Israeli police protection and performed prayers, WAFA reported.

Local sources told WAFA the group entered through the Moroccan (Mughrabi) Gate and performed what the agency called Talmudic rituals and prayers.

Jerusalem Governorate figures cited by WAFA show 40,661 settlers entered the compound between January and the end of August 2026.

During Sukkot, Palestinian estimates put entries at more than 9,000, The New Arab reported.
